Corporate venturing participants near 1,000

The number of corporate venturing units, tracked by Global Corporate Venturing, has now risen to 971.

Perhaps most interestingly, the number of units in China at 52 is now only one shy of Germany at 53. Japan is second in terms of the number of units, with 87.

This is symptomatic of the wider trend of corporate venturing in Asia catching up with developed economies, which have generally invested in corporate venturing for longer. Last year Asia overtook Europe and the US as the fastest growing region for the first time, although so far in 2013 the trend has been less pronounced.

As corporate venturing has boomed, the most mature market, the US, has risen to nearly 400 units. The UK has 62 units, Germany has 53, France has 42, while India has 31.

There were 21 new entrants in 2013 – the industry has welcomed at least 210 new entrants since the beginning of 2010.

The fastest-growing sector since the beginning of 2012 is media, followed by industrial.

New entrants in IT have dropped – it was the most actively growing sector in 2010 and 2011.
