US-based digital media company The Recount has raised $13m in a series A round that included media company Hubert Burda and broadcaster ViacomCBS, Axios has reported
Union Square Ventures (USV) led the round, which also featured fellow venture capital firm True Ventures, while Hubert Burda took part through its Burda Principal Investments unit.
The Recount has created an online platform that hosts short-form videos covering politics. It has a 20-strong staff but co-founder and CEO John Battelle told Axios it could hire 15 more employees by the middle of 2021.
Describing the participation of the corporate investors, Battelle told Axios: “It is better to have big companies looking out for us and rooting for us than a bunch of purely financial investors around the table.”
The startup had previously received an undisclosed amount of seed funding from USV, True Ventures and unnamed angel investors in October 2019. Its seed investors also included Thirty Five Ventures, SV Angel and 32 Ventures according to Axios.
