Dapper Labs gets $12m result

Canada-based blockchain gaming app developer Dapper Labs has secured $12m in funding from investors including cryptocurrency exchange operator Coinbase, consumer electronics producer Samsung and mobile game publisher Animoca Brands.

Andreessen Horowitz’s Cultural Leadership Fund also took part, as did Union Square Ventures (USV), Accomplice, Distributed Global, Valor Capital Group, Blockchange Ventures, North Island Ventures, Eonxi Ventures, A.Capital, AppWorks, BlockTower Capital, Reed Company, Greenfield One, Republic Labs, L1 Digital and Pirata Capital.

NBA professionals Andre Iguodala, Spender Dinwiddie, Garrett Temple, JaVale McGee and Aaron Gordon filled out the round. Samsung and Coinbase invested through corporate venturing units Samsung Next and Coinbase Ventures.

Dapper Labs designs and develops gaming applications based on the Flow blockchain, including Cryptokitties and NBA Top Shot, allowing users to buy online collectibles they can trade with each other.

The company raised $15m in a late 2018 funding round led by Venrock that included internet technology group Alphabet’s GV unit, Samsung Next, Animoca Brands, talent agency Endeavor and esports team owner Axiomatic.

Andreessen Horowitz, USV, Digital Currency Group, Hex Capital, Rising Tide Fund, SV Angel, CoinFund, HOF Capital, June Fund, GBIC, John Pfeffer, Matt Bellamy and William Mougayar also took part in the 2018 round.

Animoca Brands, Venrock, Version One Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Accomplice, AppWorks, Autonomous Partners, Fenbushi Digital, USV, Digital Currency Group, SV Angel and CoinFund provided another $11m for Dapper Labs in September 2019 to help its total funding hit the $40m mark.
