Israel-based augmented reality technology provider Replay Technologies secured $13.5m on Monday in a series B round led by Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners (DTCP), telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom’s early-stage investment unit.
Replay is the developer of FreeD, a video format that can create 3D-pixels of the entire surface area of a sporting arena, allowing viewers to in effect choose the perspective from which they want to watch sporting events.
Replay did not disclose the other investors in the round, which doubled its total funding to $27m.
Financial services firm Guggenheim Partners invested $9m in Replay in 2014 before the round was topped up with an undisclosed sum from Samsung Venture Investment Corp, a subsidiary of electronics producer Samsung.
Oren Yogev, CEO and co-founder of Replay Technologies, said: “DTCP’s conviction has paved the way for a significant round which will allow us to focus on taking the technology to the next step – mass consumer adoption.
“The combination of VR gear and our unique content will allow viewers to completely immerse themselves into a sports broadcast alongside – and often in a more immersive way – than those on the ground.”
