Dodo stays alive with $11.5m

The Dodo, the US-based operator of a media site featuring animal-related content, has raised $11.5m in a series B round led by media company Discovery Network, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Three undisclosed venture capital firms also participated in the round.

Launched in January 2014, Dodo produces entertainment and advocacy content centred on animals. The company also pulls in third-party content from social media networks.

Discovery Network previously led The Dodo’s $4.7m series A round in September 2014, which also featured Softbank Capital, the corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications and internet company SoftBank, as well as Sterling Equities, Greycroft Partners and RRE Ventures.

Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Oak Investment Partners and Pilot Group had already funded the company’s $1m seed round in 2013.

Dodo was founded by Izzie Lerer, who now acts as the company’s editor-at-large. She is the daughter of Kenneth Lerer, managing partner at Lerer Hippeau Ventures.
