Internet and technology conglomerate Alphabet has exited US-based autonomous vehicle software developer Scotty Labs in an acquisition of undisclosed size by food delivery service DoorDash.
Founded in 2017, Scotty Labs is working on software that will be able to remotely control vehicles. The technology is primarily aimed at the logistics sector.
Although the two companies did not specify how Scotty Labs’ technology would be integrated into DoorDash’s offering, the former’s technology could theoretically be used to eventually remotely control food delivery robots and vehicles on behalf of the corporate.
Scotty Labs’ only disclosed funding prior to the acquisition was a $6m seed round in April 2018 led by Gradient Ventures, the artificial intelligence fund formed by Alphabet subsidiary Google.
Scientific research organisation SRI International also took part in the round, as did Horizons Ventures, Hemi Ventures, Social Capital, Neuron.vc, Gravity Ranch, Graph Ventures and assorted angel investors.
