US-based augmented reality technology developer Edgybees has secured $5.5m in seed funding from a consortium featuring subsidiaries of communications technology producer Motorola Solutions and telecommunications firm Verizon.
Motorola Solutions Venture Capital and Verizon Ventures were joined by crowdfunded investment platform OurCrowd and venture capital firms 8VC, NFX and Aspect Ventures.
Founded in 2016, Edgybees has developed AR technology that imposes 2D overlays on top of high-speed video footage taken from cameras fixed to unmanned aerial vehicles, cars or body-worn accessories.
The company’s flagship drone software product, First Response, helps emergency response operators navigate through complex and unpredictable environments.
The funding will enable Edgebees to target additional markets including defence, smart cities, broadcast media and cars. It has also released a drone-controlled AR game in partnership with drone maker DJI.
Edgybees graduated from the NFX Guild accelerator in September 2017, according to TechCrunch.
