Eight beds down with Comcast in $6m seed round

US-based smart bedding startup Eight closed a $6m seed round on Wednesday featuring Comcast Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of media and cable service Comcast.

Other investors in the round included Y Combinator, Yunqi Partners, Azure Capital, Cota Capital, Vast Ventures, Stanford University, Galvanize Ventures and angel investor Jared Friedman.

Eight has developed a smart mattress cover that works as a sleep tracker, recording data about sleep patterns and bedroom environment and linking with other connected devices to regulate environmental factors like bed temperature, lighting or door locks.

The company has already sold 6,000 units through pre-orders on its website and a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. The seed funding will be used to accelerate production, develop new products and support growth.

Matteo Franceschetti, co-founder and chief executive of Eight, said: “We are leveraging the power of data to understand individual sleep patterns and discover what sleep really means to human life.

“It is exciting to see so much interest in how technology can improve sleep, and we look forward to getting the Eight Sleep Tracker into the hands of our backers and growing the company as the needs of our customers evolve.”
