Taiwan-based broadband chipset manufacturer Metanoia Communications completed a $19.3m funding round on Sunday featuring its founding investor, semiconductor and computer touchpad manufacturer Elan Microelectronics.
The round was co-led by the Taiwanese government’s National Development Fund and venture capital firm Taiwania Capital.
Formed in 2004 as part of Elan Microelectronics, Metanoia provides chipsets and programmable software for use in network communications infrastructure and specifically systems that support higher-speed broadband.
The company initially focused on wired connectivity but plans to put the funding towards diversifying into wireless 5G infrastructure, which it expects to grow significantly in use in the coming years.
Proceeds will also go to international expansion and the launch of products that meet the next-generation Gfast and VDSL2 digital subscriber line protocols.
Chien-Te Wu, President and CEO of Metanoia, said: “Introduction of new and innovative products is a key area of focus in Metanoia’s strategy and this new round of investment will enable Metanoia to develop and release 5G chips for remote radio units (RRU), small cells and [customer-premises equipment] in (the) near future.
“The company will further capitalise on and broaden its established position as a recognised leader in the broadband wireline markets, where our employees are striving to enhance the overall customer experience, while deepening relationships with existing and new customers.”
The move comes as the Taiwanese government prepares for the country’s roll-out of 5G telecommunications services later this year.
Providing comprehensive 5G coverage requires enhanced connectivity in built-up areas through systems such as small cellular transmission sites, representing a potential opportunity for Metanoia.
