Spain-based online ticketing platformTicketea has been acquired by US-headquartered peer Eventbrite for an undisclosed sum, providing an exit to leisure and travel-focused e-commerce firm Atrápalo.
Ticketea operates a ticketing portal for live events such as music concerts and theatre productions. It helps organisers promote their events and is primarily active in Spain and Portugal.
Eventbrite expects its ticketing offering to be complemented by Ticketea’s directory, which includes Spain-based music festivals Dreambeach Villaricos, Viña Rock and Arenal Sound. Javier Andres, Ticketea’s co-founder and CEO, will become Eventbrite’s country director for Spain and Portugal.
Ticketea raised $3.9m from venture capital fund Seaya Ventures in 2013 two years after Atrápalo invested more than $1.3m in the company.
Spanish state-owned investment vehicle Empresa Nacional de Innovación contributed to a $271,000 round for the company in 2010 alongside unnamed backers, adding to the $280,000 it raised from angel investors including Jaime Diaz the year before.
Andres said: “We have been building a significant market presence in Spain for nearly a decade. It is exciting to be recognised by the global leader in event technology as they invest more heavily in our growing market.”
