Online travel agency Expedia has acquired US-based travel content platform Trover for an undisclosed sum in a deal that gives an exit to automated workplace travel and expense management software producer Concur.
Trover was founded with the $2.9 of funding left over when its predecessor, travel reviews site Travelpost, closed down in 2011. It functions as an online community where travellers can share stories, photos and tips with each other.
Trover raised $2.5m in a round led by Concur’s Perfect Trip Fund in 2013 that also included Travelpost investors General Catalyst Partners and Benchmark Capital, and company co-founder Rich Barton.
Jason Karas, Trover’s CEO, said in a blog post announcing the deal on Wednesday: “With over 450 million visitors across its brand websites every month, Expedia can dramatically increase the reach of Trover.
“This means your photos will have a much larger impact. Hopefully, many new visitors will see and be inspired by your travels. We are also betting that some of these visitors will join our community, adding new voices, relationships, and killer images that fuel our passion for adventure.”
