GainSpan makes $18m connection

Embedded wireless (wi-fi) internet company GainSpan secured $18m in series C finacing on Monday from investors including semiconductor maker Intel’s corporate venturing unit, Intel Capital, and In-Q-Tel, the venturing unit funded by the US intelligence community.

The round was co-led by venture capital (VC) firms Hatteras Venture Partners and Mobile Internet Capital, with participation from private equity fund manager Opus Capital, and VC firms New Venture Partners, Camp Ventures and Sigma Partners.

Spun-off from Intel in September 2006, GainSpan’s low-power, embedded wi-fi chips and modules are used by technology manufacturers to link their mobile devices with smartphones or existing wi-fi infrastructures. GainSpan has now raised about $30m from the above investors and earlier investor, VC firm OVP Venture Partners.
