Garena, a Singapore-based mobile platform backed by internet company Tencent, has raised an undisclosed sum from investors including SeaTown, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore government-owned investment firm Temasek.
Investment fund Global Digital Prima Venture and startup studio Mistletoe also took part in the round.
Founded in 2009, Garena has created a range of products such as online social gaming platform Garena+, payments processing service Airpay, marketplace Shopee and social network Beetalk.
Garena had secured a total of $500m prior to this latest round. It raised $170m in a March 2016 series D round led by Malaysia’s strategic investment fund, Khazanah Nasional, which valued the company at $3.75bn.
The company’s other investors include the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, General Atlantic, Keytone Ventures and Toivo Annus, a co-founder of voice-over-IP platform Skype.
Details about Tencent’s involvement remain undisclosed. Tencent President Martin Lau told China Daily in 2013 it was an investor in Garena but details of its funding have not been publicly disclosed.
Forrest Li, founder, chairman and group chief executive of Garena, said: “We are proud to welcome three of Asia’s most respected investment firms to Garena. Their insights and connectivity across the region will support and accelerate our mission to ‘connect the dots’ for our customers.”
Archana Parekh, portfolio manager at SeaTown, and Taizo Son, president and chief executive of Mistletoe, have joined Garena’s advisory board in conjunction with the round.
