GCV Emerging Leaders 2022: Daniel Wypler

Daniel Wypler is US-based partner for QBE Ventures, the corporate venturing capital (CVC) arm of Australia-headquartered insurance provider QBE Insurance.

Since joining QBE Ventures in September 2020, Wypler has been focused on advancing its strategy, comprising investments in series A through C rounds in insurance technology developers. Ticket sizes range between $3m and $10m deployed across Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK.

James Orchard, chief executive of QBE Ventures, said: “Dan has been instrumental to the refresh of QBE Ventures, and has brought market leading experience to lead our investment team.

“His considered approach and strong network have added significant value to the QBE Group already, ensuring we hit our early milestones and establish QBE Ventures as a key player in the insurtech market.”

QBE Ventures scored an exit in October 2020, when insurtech producer Bold Penguin agreed to buy insurance document software provider RiskGenius.

Bold Penguin itself was also QBE Ventures’ portfolio company, which was eventually acquired by insurer American Family Insurance in January 2021, nine months before insurer HSB agreed to buy cyber safety analysis platform Zeguro.

Prior to joining QBE Ventures, Wypler served as investment director at another CVC unit, financial services firm ANZ’s ANZi Ventures, where he worked between 2018 and 2020, making 17 investments across fintech, proptech, data and other segments.

He also had a one-year stint as incubation manager at financial services firm National Australia Bank’s NAB Labs subsidiary between 2017 and 2018, before which he focused on late seed and series A investments at financial services group AMP’s New Ventures unit.
