GCV Emerging Leaders 2022: John Glushik

John Glushik is vice-president of New Ventures and managing director for HG Ventures (HGV), the corporate venture capital arm of US-headquartered diversified holding company The Heritage Group (THG).

Kip Frey, executive vice-president of The Heritage Group and managing partner of HG Ventures, said of Glushik: “John is the primary reason that HGV has been able to execute on 28 venture investments from a standing start in 2019.

“He led our most successful investment to date, which resulted in a venture return in the 10-times range in less than two years.”

Amy Schumacher, chief executive of Heritage Group, added: “John is an incredible resource for our corporate venture operations. A consummate deal maker and a master VC technician – and a true leader in establishing HG Ventures as a force in corporate venture.”

Regarding what drew him to HGV, Glushik pointed out that THG has a history of stable leadership and a long-term, consistent vision of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

He also highlighted the ability to build a venture investing group within THG from the ground up with a structure and process that leverages the strengths of both the pure VC and corporate VC models, but without the traditional weaknesses.

Before joining HG Ventures, Glushik was managing director of the Duke Angel Network at Duke University, has served as general partner at Intersouth Partners since 1999 and was chief executive of Canines from 2012 to 2018, among other hats.

He earned his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and materials science from Duke University, his master of science in aeronautics and astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MBA from Northwestern University’s JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
