Josh McClung is a director of cleantech strategy and investments at Cox Enterprises, a privately held, global company with over $20bn in revenue across three major divisions in the communications, automotive and media industries.
McClung said: “The mission of Cox Cleantech is to design and execute inorganic growth strategies that operate at the intersection of people, planet and profit. The unit is part of the diversification efforts to create new operating verticals at Cox Enterprises.” He leads two of the verticals within cleantech – food and agriculture and water.
McClung initially joined Cox Enterprises via its automotive division in 2015 as director of new ventures, leading the creation of new internal ventures, execution of minority investments and development of non-traditional strategic partnerships. During his time at Cox, he has been involved in a number of transactions, such as BrightFarms, Getaround, Flexdrive and Ouster.
Immediately before joining Cox, McClung was a vice-president of VC firm Sandbox Industries, founding and co-heading its innovation consulting arm Sandbox Innovation Partners. In the unit’s first year of operations, it collaborated with six Fortune 500 organisations based both in the US and overseas across a diverse range of industries – apparel, automotive, consumer products, energy and insurance.
Prior to Sandbox Industries, McClung was an associate at investment firm KarpReilly and an investment banking analyst at financial services firms Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Indiana University. He has been an active member of Techstars and named a World Economic Forum Global Shaper.
