US-based 3D printer manufacturer Optomec has raised $6m in series B capital from GE Ventures, the investment vehicle of conglomerate General Electric, and design software developer Autodesk, Dow Jones reported yesterday.
Autodesk participated through its $100m Spark Investment Fund, an initiative formed in October 2014 specifically aimed at supporting startups working on 3D printing technologies.
Optomec’s 3D printers are aimed at the industrial sector and are able to produce sensors made out of metal. The technology can also be used to create antennas used in smartphones.
The money will go towards customer support, sales, product development and inventory as the company increases its focus on the industrial internet of things. Optomec, which was founded in 1997, has not released details concerning previous funding rounds.
