Gengo translates interest into series C funding

Gengo, the Japan-based operator of an online crowdsourced translation service, completed a $5.4m series C round led by human resources provider Recruit Holdings yesterday.

The round also included Intel Capital and STC Ventures Fund, the respective corporate venturing units of semiconductor maker Intel and telecommunications firm Saudi Telecom, as well as digital marketing company Allied Architects, consultancy Libertad, corporate-backed venture capital firm Iris Capital Management, SBI Investment, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, CrowdWorks and Infocomm Investments.

Founded in 2008, Gengo has built a platform through which a community of more than 15,000 qualified translators provides a translation service it claims is quicker than traditional services and more reliable than machine translation.

Gengo has now raised $24.4m in total, $12m of which came from a 2013 series B round backed by Intel Capital, Saudi Telecom Ventures, Iris Capital, Infocomm, Atomico and mobile network operator NTT Docomo.

Other past investors in Gengo include 500 Startups, Kapor Capital and Point Nine Capital. The company will use the latest funding to expand its sales and marketing operations in both existing and new markets.
