Google adds to Desmos

The corporate venturing unit of Google, Google Ventures, has backed education technology startup Desmos, a company which has created a free online graphing calculator for math students.

Last year the US-based Desmos attracted a $800k investment from Mitch Kapor, Learn Capital and Kindler Capital. Desmos, a San Francisco company, will use the new funds from Google to pursue further hiring and growth to expands its 8 person team. Although no funding agreement was disclosed, it is reported the investment from Google means Desmos have now raised over $1m in funding, according to news provider Techcrunch.

Rich Miner, partner at Google Ventures, said:“Today technology is rapidly redefining traditional education. Math is a subject area where we lose many of our students and our competitive edge. If math can come to life, as Desmos is doing, we can build a generation of students that is engaged and deeply interested in the areas of math and science. We are excited to be working with Desmos as they scale their operations to have an impact on students around the world.”
