Internet technology provider Google has provided $22m of series A funding for KaiOS Technologies, the US-based developer of a mobile operating system, as part of a collaboration agreement.
KaiOS is working on a web-based operating system designed for use on smartphones and internet-of-things devices that utilise less memory than conventional mobile devices, meaning consumers can access more affordable options.
The platform has already been shipped on more than 30 million phones through partnerships with established telecommunications companies. The companies plan to jointly develop versions of Google Search, Assistant, Maps and YouTube for use on KaiOS.
KaiOS CEO Sebastien Codeville said: “This funding will help us fast-track development and global deployment of KaiOS-enabled smart feature phones, allowing us to connect the vast population that still cannot access the internet, especially in emerging markets.”
The deal followed an investment by Reliance Retail, the retail services subsidiary of conglomerate Reliance Industries, which paid about $7m for a 16% stake in KaiOs in March this year.
