US-based Secret was co-founded by David Byttow and Chrys Bader-Wechseler, who have worked for Square and Google respectively. The funding was led by Google Ventures, with participants from Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers.
The $10m financing leaves Secret with a post-money valuation of $50m. This funding includes the $1.43m gathered in their seed round in December 2013.
The app’s highest ranking was on February 7th, when it reached 16th most popular social network in the app store.
“A slight layer of anonymity is simply a tool to draw out this expression [anonymous comments on posts], while an emphasis on strong connections (via the address book) makes such expressions more valuable to both senders and receivers,” said MG Siegler, general partner at Google Ventures.
The app is currently only available in the United States and Canada.
