Gorkana-backed Brandwatch raises $6m

UK-based public relations planning and monitoring company Gorkana Group has again backed UK-based social media monitoring company Brandwatch as part of a $6m round that offers a mark-up on valuation to its early angel investors.

Gorkana was joined in the round by venture firm Nauta Capital, which led the financing on Thursday.

Jeremy Thompson, managing director of Gorkana Group, said: "We are very pleased to further invest to support this exciting next phase in Brandwatch’s evolution."

Carles Ferrer, general partner at Nauta will join the Brandwatch board, while Al Sisto, a venture partner, will be an observer.

Gorkana first backed Brandwatch with an undisclosed amount in November 2010, through its sister company Durrants, which has now been merged into the Gorkana Group. Brandwatch was launched in 2007.

News provider Angel News said London Business Angels (LBA) network investors held "a significant minority stake in the company, having invested over £450,000, including an investment of £42,000 by the LBA EIS tracker 2 fund, between 2006 and 2007. As a result of this latest funding round, LBA investors now have a mark up exceeding 6x [six times] return on their initial investment."
