Greenland homes in on Baicells and Reconova deals

Property developer Greenland Holdings has invested a total of almost $52m in China-based broadband technology provider Baicells Technologies and visual recognition software developer Reconova Technologies, China Money Network reported on Friday.

The corporate provided RMB200m ($29.1m) of the funding for Baicells and supplied RMB156m ($22.6m) for Reconova.

Baicells is developing long-term evolution (LTE) technology that assists customers such as mobile operators, broadband access operators, cable operators and enterprise private network providers in establishing 5G wireless broadband networks.

Qualcomm Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of mobile chipmaker Qualcomm, led a $14.6m series B-plus round for Baicells in January this year. It came 11 months after the company had secured an undisclosed amount of funding in a round backed by Liuhe Capital and Beijing E-town International Investment and Development.

Internet provider Century Internet, Synergy Capital and private investor Lei Jun are also among Baicells’ shareholders, according to Hanfeng, though the company has not disclosed details of its earlier funding.

Reconova is developing visual perception products that use computer vision and machine learning technology. It has created smart advertising technology that allows brands to analyse their viewers’ watching habits by using image processing technology to map their facial expressions while watching.

The company also provides facial recognition verification terminals and gates in addition to a big-data management system for facial-identity checkpoints and high-definition, face and body capture cameras.

Intel Capital, the corporate venture capital subsidiary of semiconductor technology producer Intel, invested an undisclosed amount in Reconova in May 2018. It had raised $15m in a series B round that included Shangshi Fund, Infore Capital, Shanghai Saitian Investment Management and Score Capital five months earlier.
