Setyanto Hantoro has departed from telecommunications firm Telkom Indonesia’s corporate venturing arm, MDI Ventures, and taken a managing director role at its its wireless network group, Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel).

Hantoro has worked for Telkom Indonesia for more than a decade and held a variety of roles ranging from assistant vice-president (VP) of business portfolio and financial planning to commissioner for telecoms infrastructure subsidiary Mitratel.

Having been Telkom Indonesia’s VP of strategic business development and executive VP of strategic investment for more than seven years from 2012, Hantoro most recently served as interim CEO of MDI Ventures, according to Telecompaper Asia, after former CEO Nicko Widjaja’s departure in July 2019.

Launched in early 2016, MDI Ventures targets digital technology developers in areas including big data, cloud computing and the internet of things. In addition to providing equity funding, the unit has formed joint investment vehicles with other corporates, such as Centauri Fund and Telkomtelstra.

Telkomsel also has a VC division called Telkomsel Mitra Inovasi which oversees a $40m fund formed by MDI Ventures and telecoms firm Singapore Telecommunications’ Singtel Innov8 subsidiary.
