Hazel Health hits up Centene in series C

US-based paediatric telehealth system Hazel Health received an amount reported by CNBC to be $33.5m in series C funding on Tuesday from investors including health insurance provider Centene.

Bain Capital Ventures, the venture capital arm of private equity firm Bain Capital, led the round with VC fund Owl Ventures, while Uprising and UCSF Foundation Investment Company also participated.

Founded in 2015, Hazel runs an in-school service that enables sick children to communicate with qualified doctors through an online video system. It can also be used at home through connected mobile devices such as iPads or smartphones.

The company coordinates with a student’s existing primary care provider where possible or directs patients to paediatricians or clinics in its network.

Hazel emerged from stealth in February 2019 and has not revealed details of its earlier funding, but Owl Ventures said on its own website it led Hazel’s series B round in 2019.

Regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, Hazel chief executive Josh Golomb told TechCrunch this week: “Our pipeline has exploded. A lot of the states have made expansion for telehealth and increasing access a priority. We were going to have eight or nine states that we were going to prioritise.

“That is priority number one… another big chunk is really making sure that we can invest in expanding the product to support that volume of states and finding ways to support our families and district partners.”
