HelloFresh plates up $84.7m

Germany-based meal subscription service HelloFresh, backed by e-commerce group Rocket Internet, has received $84.7m in funding from investment firm Baillie Gifford, TechCrunch reported today.

The investment valued HelloFresh at €2.6bn ($3bn). Rocket Internet retains a majority stake of 57.2%.

Established in 2011, HelloFresh operates a service that delivers exact portions of ingredients along with recipes to subscribers. The company claims its offering eliminates food waste and the need to plan and shop for meals.

HelloFresh previously raised approximately $193m in funding from investors including Vorwerk Direct Selling Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of diversified conglomerate Vorwerk, Insight Venture Partners and Phenomen Ventures.

Holtzbrinck Ventures, the venture capital firm spun out of publisher Georg von Holtzbrinck, and investment firm Kinnevik had also backed the company, but remained absent from an investor list reported last month, suggesting they may have sold their shares.

HelloFresh was reported in August to be exploring an initial public offering in October.
