Here maps out purchase of ATS

Location services provider Here Technologies has agreed to acquire Advanced Telematic Systems (ATS), a Germany-based developer of over-the-air (OTA) technology, enabling original design manufacturer Wistron to exit.

Financial terms have not been disclosed but the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018. A Here spokesperson told TechCrunch that the deal will make the company a major player in the OTA sector.

Founded in 2014, ATS has developed secure OTA technology that is used to update operating systems of wireless devices such as smartphones and cars.

Following the purchase, Here will integrate ATS technology into its business, potentially using it to power secure map and software updates to drones and connected devices.

The Here spokesperson also told TechCrunch that ATS had previously raised more than $12m. According to deals database PitchBook, some of the investors include Wistron as well as venture capital firms ID Ventures America and IT-Farm Corporation.

Ralf Herrtwich, a senior vice-president at Here, said: “Data and software delivery is a defining factor for future success within the automotive industry as vehicles are becoming more connected and autonomous.

“The acquisition of ATS is a hugely important strategic investment for us to complement our portfolio as a premium automotive cloud provider.”
