IBM and Columbia matriculate blockchain accelerators

Technology group IBM and Columbia University have unveiled two eight-week accelerator programs aimed at spurring innovation in the blockchain and data transparency spaces, Innovation Enterprise Channels has reported.

A first program, named the IBM Blockchain Accelerator, will target later-stage growth companies, while a second initiative known as Columbia Blockchain Launch Accelerator will cater to pre-seed companies.

The move builds on the launch of Columbia-IBM Center for Blockchain and Data Transparency in July 2018 to foster cross-disciplinary research in both areas from the academic, scientific, business and government communities.

Both programs will accept 10 startups, offering access to IBM design workshops as well as business and technical support and connections to Columbia’s research community and student talent pool.

IBM will also allow participants to use its cloud computing technology. In all, each startup is expected to receive services and technologies worth $400,000 by taking part.

Columbia Blockchain will begin accepting applications in January 2019, however IBM Blockchain Accelerator is already taking “nominations” for its initial cohort.

David Post, managing director of IBM Blockchain Accelerator, said: “The possibilities presented by blockchain technology are seemingly endless, and we are seeing strong dedication by technical talent to build game-changing applications.”
