In-Q-Tel, the corporate venturing style unit of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has participated in an E round of funding for Silicon Valley-based Cloudera. Cloudera raised $65m in its fifth round of venture capital funding, bringing the total funds raised by the company to $140m. Return backers included venture capital firm Accel Partners, which invested $5m in 2009, and led the round with participation from venture capital firms Greylock Partners, Ignition Partners and private equity firm Meritech Capital Partners.
According to AllThingsD, this deal values Cloudera at about $700m. Cloudera has yet to make a formal announcement about the funding.
Founded in 2008, Cloudera was among the first to commercialize Hadoop, the open source computing framework that makes it easier for large corporations to manage large volumes of data that cannot be stored in a traditional database.
The new funds will be used to further fuel Hadoop adoption and expand its European operations.
In 2011 Cloudera raised $40m in series D funding from In -Q-Tel. Cloudera’s series C round raised $25m in October last year. Prior to that, Accel and Greylock participated in Cloudera’s $5m series A and $6m series B round, both of which took place in 2009.
