Intel Corporation, US-based microprocessor maker, has acquired Israel-based technology developer Omek Interactive, one of Intel Capital’s investee companies. The acquisition price is estimated to be around $40m.
Prior to the acquisition, Omek Interactive had raised a total of $14m; Intel Capital, Intel’s corporate venturing unit, led Omek Interactive’s $7m third round of financing in July 2011.
Guy Grimland, Intel’s Israel public relations manager, said: “The acquisition of Omek Interactive will help increase Intel’s capabilities in the delivery of more immersive perceptual computing experiences.”
Omek Interactive, which develops gesture recognition and tracking technology for manufacturers and software developers, was founded in 2006.
Samsung and Qualcomm were reported to have been interested in bidding for Omek Interactive; Qualcomm acquired US-based gesture recognition company GestureTek in 2011. Apple is also reported to be interested in acquiring Israel-based PrimeSense, the company which licences its technology for use in Microsoft’s Xbox motion control device Kinect. In the same sector, HP has announced a partnership with Leap Motion earlier in 2013.
