SkySQL, a Finland-based software developer of an open source database dubbed MariaDB, has raised $20m in a series B round led by semiconductor company Intel’s corporate venturing unit, Intel Capital.
California Technology Ventures, Finnish Industry Investment, Open Ocean Capital and Spintop Private Partners also took part in the round.
In April 2012, SkySQL secured $4m in a series A round featuring OnCorps, an analytic and user-controlled social networking platform backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, Finnish Industry Investment, Spintop Ventures and Open Ocean Capital.
SkySQL will use the fresh funding to expand its customer support team and to commercially scale its product, MariaDB.
Erik Jorgensen, investment director for Intel Capital in Western Europe, said: “The database software market has gone through tremendous change in the last several years, driven by the increasing variety, velocity and volume of data, by the elasticity and scalability offered from cloud computing, and by the need for organisations to both reduce administration costs and increase flexibility.
“SkySQL is in a position to be a key player in this field.”
