US-based virtual reality (VR) technology developer Voke has been acquired by semiconductor producer Intel for an undisclosed sum, providing an exit to the corporate’s investment arm, Intel Capital.
The transaction also provided an exit to television network A&E, NBA basketball team Sacramento Kings and venture capital firm Nautilus Ventures.
Founded in 2004 as 3D-4U, Voke has developed immersive, multi-platform VR technology that lets consumers stream live sports and music events in 3D on their headsets, or in 2D on mobile devices and televisions.
Intel has not revealed how it will integrate Voke’s technology in detail, though the corporate stated that the acquisition will form part of a move into the sports entertainment sector.
Intel Capital led a $12.6m funding round for Voke in March 2016 that also included A&E, Sacramento Kings and Nautilus. Securities filings reveal that Voke obtained approximately $56m in capital between 2008 and 2014, though the backers of those rounds have not been named.
