Irujo cements Cemex Ventures departure

Pedro Irujo, an adviser for Cemex Ventures, the strategic investment arm of Mexico-headquartered building materials supplier Cemex, for which he was a founding member, departed the unit at the end of 2018.

Irujo helped launch the Spain-based Cemex Ventures in 2016, having participated in designing the corporate venturing and open innovation scheme, scouting and investing in early-stage ventures.

Cemex Ventures focuses on the construction ecosystem and led funding rounds for ground analysis and machine learning startup Saalg Geomechanics in February 2018 and data-empowered workplace accidents prevention platform creator Prysmex in May.

Prior to Cemex Ventures, Irujo had been at Cemex’s digital consulting subsidiary, Neoris from 2005 to 2016, helping it build its presence in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. After joining Cemex Ventures, he remained a member of Neoris’ executive committee and advisory board until mid-2018.

Regarding his future plans, Irujo told Global Corporate Venturing: “I will be engaged with the entrepreneurial, technology and corporate venturing worlds, having the opportunity to connect and learn from awesome people like I have been doing lately.

“Currently, I am engaged with the entrepreneurial ecosystem, since I am an active investor and adviser in some startups and an associate professor at some business schools.”
