Cubie, a Taiwan and US-based mobile messaging and drawing service with 4.4 million users since it launched in March, has raised $1.1m in its seed round from a consortium including corporate venturing units.
The consortium included Japan-based venture capital firm B Dash Ventures, backed by limited partners including telecommunications company NTT, internet services provider NEC Biglobe, social gaming company Gree, internet advertising company Septeni, financial services provider Mitsubishi UFJ and state-backed SME Support.
The other direct investors in Cubie are NTT Investment Partners, the corporate venturing unit for the eponymous holding company; Biglobe Capital, corporate venturing unit for NEC; Gumi Ventures, the corporate venturing unit for the eponymous social games developer spun off from Gree earlier this year; Pinehurst; US-based accelerator 500 Startups; and angel investor Andrew Chen.
Cubie has also joined the 500 Startup accelerator and said Thailand was its largest market with more than 1 million registered users, followed by Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong.
