Mobile gaming company Kabam has purchased TapZen, a US-based games studio backed by internet portal Tencent and game developer Zynga, for an undisclosed amount.
TapZen raised $8m in a series B round in June 2014 from Tencent, after secuing $10m in series A funding from Zynga in 2012.
Neither Kabam nor TapZen disclosed details of their exits. The acquisition was revealed concurrently with Kabam’s purchase of another games developer, Magic Pixel, and TapZen will now be merged with Magic Pixel to form a new Kabam-branded studio.
TapZen and Magic Pixel previously worked together to create a mobile strategy game in 2012, called “This Means War!”.
Kabam hopes that merging the two new acquisitions into a Los Angeles-based studio will strengthen its relationship with Hollywood entertainment studios, with which it has partnered in the past to launch games based on Disney, Warner Bros, MGM and Universal franchises.
