KDDI Open Innovation Fund, the corporate venturing entity of China-based telecommunications and mobile network company KDDI group, has joined other Asia corporate venturing and private equity investors by becoming the latest backer of Japan-based games developer, Mutations Studio. KDDI invested JPY230m ($2.2m).
Other investors include CyberAgent’s corporate venturing unit, CyberAgent Ventures, which invested in September 2012 an undisclosed amount in a seed funding and more recent corporate investor, FuRyu , an Asia-based entertainment company, which invested in February as part of the same financing round, according to news reports.
The latest capital injection will enable the games developer to accelerate the development of its smart phone gaming products, which include its popular Kaibutsu Chronicle gaming product.
But the company’s UberStrike game is perhaps its unique selling point to investors, due to its multi-player interactive technology which lets players play online against each other from varying sources including UberStrike.com, Facebook, Kongregate and the Mac App Store.
