Japanese electronics conglomerate Sony has hired Kwame Kyei Koranteng as an investment manager for its corporate venture capital arm, Sony Ventures.
Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Koranteng was an investor at Enza Capital for eight months after three years and a half at another Kenyan venture capital fund Chendaria Capital.
Before Koranteng was hired, Sony’s Africa fund was run by the CVC’s European team, who partnered with development organisation International Finance Corporation to identify investment opportunities.
Sony Ventures runs several vehicles including Sony Innovation Fund, Innovation Growth Fund, Sony Innovation Fund: Environment and Sony Innovation Fund 3. Most recently, it launched the $10m Sony Innovation Fund: Africa in October 2023, focusing on African music, film, game and animation producers.
Formed in 2016, Sony Ventures has $430m in capital and team members across the US, Europe, Israel, Japan and India. The unit targets startups developing entertainment, fintech, enterprise software, deeptech and climatetech products and services.
