Kymeta, a US-based satellite systems producer backed by communications firm Liberty Global, closed a $62m series D round on Monday.
The round was backed by university venture fund Osage University Partners, philanthropic outfit Kresge Foundation, venture capital firm Lux Capital, private investor Bill Gates and several undisclosed strategic investors.
Founded in 2011, Kymeta is working on antenna beams for satellites that can be steered without requiring any moving parts. The antennae are thin and flat and have applications in a range of products including broadband services.
Kymeta previously raised $20m from Bill Gates and Lux Capital in 2014, though it has not revealed whether this was a separate round or a first close of the series D round.
Liberty Global supported a $50m series C round in 2013, investing alongside Osage, Kresge, Lux Capital and Bill Gates. The company also backed a $12m round in 2012 that was led by Gates and backed by Lux Capital. Kymeta has not revealed further details about its funding.
