US-based communications platform developer Layer has raised $15m in a series B round that included Microsoft Ventures and Salesforce Ventures, the respective investment divisions of software company Microsoft and cloud computing firm Salesforce.
The round was led by VC firm Greycroft Partners and featured other, unnamed existing shareholders.
Layer has developed a platform that enables companies to easily embed communications capabilities into their websites and apps.
In addition to raising a series B round, Layer also revealed it has acquired Cola, a US-based messaging startup, for an undisclosed amount.
Layer has now raised $23m in total funding, according to its latest press release. The company previously secured an undisclosed amount as part of a strategic partnership with consultancy Dream Incubator in May 2016 and an undisclosed sum from internet company Social Discovery Ventures the following month.
Homebrew, AME Cloud Ventures, CrunchFund and Fuel Capital provided $14.5m in series A capital in 2014.
In June 2013, Layer closed a $7.5m seed round that featured Bloomberg Beta, the corporate venturing arm of media company Bloomberg, which had contributed to a $1.5m first tranche the previous month.
The seed round also included Homebrew, AME Cloud Ventures, CrunchFund, Fuel Capital, Data Collective, SV Angel, e.Ventures, Ash Patel and Greycroft.
Layer did not, however, name Bloomberg Beta as an existing investor in its latest press release.
