US-based cloud-based educational software developer LearnZillion, backed by publisher O’Reilly Media, has obtained $13m in funding from investors including venture capital firms DCM Ventures and Owl Ventures.
Philanthropic outfit Omidyar Network also contributed funds, alongside 10 other unnamed backers.
Incorporated in 2011, LearnZillion has developed curricular software aimed at primary and secondary education teachers. The curriculum is authored by more than 200 teachers and experts from across the US.
O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures (OATV), the corporate venturing unit of O’Reilly Media, previously participated in a $7m round in 2013. DCM led the round, which also featured NewSchools Venture Fund, Calvert Social Investment Fund and DC Community Ventures.
OATV had also taken part in a $2.4m round in 2012 alongside DC Community Ventures, Learn Capital Venture Partners, NewSchools, Citybridge Foundation, ULU Ventures and Calvert.
The company won a Next Generation Learning Challenges grant from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and William & Flora Hewlett Foundation in 2011.
Emerson Investment Management has also backed LearnZillion according to the latest press release, though the company has not revealed further details about its involvement.
