LedEngin, a US-based maker of lighting components, has raised $9m in its series D round from some of the world’s biggest chip and clean-tech investors, according to news provider VentureWire.
The light-emitting diode (LED) company said the round was led by new investor NGP Energy Technology Partners, a clean-technology venture capital fund, with participation from existing VCs WK Technology Fund, a Taiwan-based firm backed by some of the country’s biggest industrial companies, France-based Partech International and US-based Horizon Ventures, which stopped making new deals last year.
Other members of the D round consortium were Eyon Group, a Taiwanese technology conglomerate chaired by Charles Chen, former chairman of LED chip company Epistar and current chair of United Test & Assembly Center, and independent investor and LedEngin’s chairman, Keh-Shew Lu.
LedEngin closed its $11m series C round in 2007 from Partech International, WK Technology Fund and Dr Lu.
David Tahmassebi, executive president of LedEngin, who joined the company in 2006 after acting as an entrepreneur-in-residence at WK, said: "The addition of NGP Energy Technology Partners to our existing funding partners will bring one of the most experienced and well respected energy technology focused funds with deep connections and experience in energy markets."
