Germany-based interactive entertainment and game developer Klang has received $22.3m in a series B round backed by Lego Ventures, the corporate venturing vehicle for toy producer Lego Group.
The round was led by alternative investment firm Novator and also featured Northzone, Makers Fund, Firstminute Capital, Neoteny and New Life Ventures.
Founded in 2013, Klang focuses on massively multiplayer online (MMO) games that thematically explore the future of the humanity, in a bid to present complex concepts in ways that are easy to digest.
The company debuted in 2015 with a mobile game called ReRunners: Race for the World. Its next title is Seed, an online life simulator where players control virtual avatars who work together to colonise a virtual exoplanet following the ruin of Earth.
The round was announced together with Klang’s appointment of Birgir Ragnarsson as chairman, a position he had previously held at another game studio, CCP Games.
Klang raised an undisclosed sum in a July 2018 series A round that was led by Northzone, and which included Makers Fund, Firstminute Capital and Novator. The latter three had contributed to a $5m round four months earlier that was led by Makers Fund and also backed by Mosaic.
London Venture Partners had provided an undisclosed amount of funding for Klang in 2015, before angel investor Reid Hoffman invested an undisclosed sum in June 2017.
