Intel Capital, the corporate venturing arm of semiconductor technology provider Intel, has led a $20m series C round for US-based application development software provider Lightbend.
The round also included Bain Capital Ventures, Blue Cloud Ventures, Polytech Ecosystem Ventures and Shasta Ventures. Vibhor Rastogi, Intel Capital’s director for enterprise software, will join Lightbend’s board of directors in conjunction with the round.
Founded as Typesafe in 2011, Lightbend has developed a platform that helps developers build message-driven applications on Java Virtual Machine.
Doug Fisher, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s software and services group, explained: “Mobile and [internet of things] use cases are driving enterprises to modernise how they process large volumes of data.
“Lightbend provides the fundamental building blocks for developing, deploying and managing today’s large-scale, distributed applications.”
Greylock Partners led a $3m series A round announced by Lightbend at the time of its launch, before returning to invest alongside Shasta Ventures, networking technology provider Juniper Networks’ Junos Innovation Fund and angel investor François Stieger in a $14m round in 2012.
