US-based educational game developer LocoMotive Labs raised $4m yesterday in a series A round co-led by telecommunications company SoftBank, and educational services provider Tal Education Group.
The round also featured venture capital fund K9 Ventures, Kapor Capital, Kapor Center for Social Impact’s ventures capital arm, NewSchools Venture Fund, VC firm D3Jubilee, Joe Gleberman and Jerry Colonna.
SoftBank invested through its Korea-based corporate venturing unit, SoftBank Ventures Korea.
Founded in 2012 by two parents who develop assistive and play-based apps to support children with special needs to learn independently, LocoMotive’s award-winning game Todo Math has been translated into seven different languages and downloaded more than one million times worldwide.
LocoMotive has raised $5.15m to date, securing seed funding from Kapor Capital, NewSchools Venture Fund and K9 Ventures in September 2013. It will use the funding to expand its consumer presence in Asia, harnessing its connections with its Chinese and Korean investors.
