MaaS Global, a Finland-based journey booking app developer backed by several corporate investors, has closed a €9m ($10.4m) funding round, securing the money from undisclosed backers.
Founded in 2015, MaaS has created a mobility-as-a-service app called Whim that allows users to book all their transport – covering cars, bicycles, taxis and public transport – in one place, paying either a flat monthly fee or through a pay-as-you-go model.
The service is available in Helsinki, Finland as well as Antwerp, Belgium and the West Midlands in the UK. MaaS will use the latest funding to expand the service into additional regions.
The company has now raised approximately $29.7m, having completed a $16.8m round in August 2017 featuring automotive manufacturers Toyota and Karsan, auto parts maker Denso, insurer Aioi Nissay Dowa, technology services provider Swiftcom, electronics producer Veho and public transport provider Transdev.
MaaS had secured $2.5m from Karsan, Transdev and bus service operator Korsisaari, business automation software provider Good Sign, queue management technology producer GoSwift, payment services firm IQ Payments, loyalty system developer Neocard, brokerage Delta Capital Force and the state-owned Tekes in early 2016.
Sampo Hietanen, founder and chief executive of MaaS Global, said: “We are extremely happy that we have been able to prove the MaaS concept really works.
“Our investors believe in our growth and they wanted to invest more and give us the opportunity to scale and grow faster. Now we are able to strengthen our global presence and keep on being the forerunner in this new and exciting industry.”
