MakieLab bows out

MakieLab, a UK-based producer of custom, 3D-printed dolls that was backed by entertainment company Disney, has been acquired by the very same corporate, according to TechCrunch.

Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. MakieLab has not officially confirmed that Disney is its new owner, only saying it was a “US media behemoth”.

However, the company hinted as much when paraphrasing a popular quote from Disney-owned franchise Star Wars, writing “These aren’t the acquirers you’re looking for.”

Alice Taylor, chief executive and founder of MakieLab, has joined the Walt Disney Studios’ StudioLab as director, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Disney reportedly purchased MakieLab’s technology and assets in July last year.

MakieLab’s technology enabled users to order 3D-printed dolls based on avatars they created online.

The company closed a $1.4m seed round in 2012 co-led by early-stage investors Lifeline Ventures and Sunstone Capital, with participation from assorted angel investors. In 2015, MakieLab joined the Disney Accelerator and secured $120,000 as part of the program.
