India-based esports platform developer Mobile Premier League (MPL) has collected $90m in a funding round featuring telecommunications firm Telkom Indonesia and ride hailing service Go-Jek, TechCrunch reported yesterday.
SIG, RTP Global, Sequoia India and Base Partners also took part in the round, in which Telkom Indonesia and Go-Jek participated through respective corporate venture capital units MDI Ventures and Go-Ventures.
The round valued MPL at $375m to $400m pre-money, a person privy to the development told TechCrunch.
MPL runs a mobile games publishing platform and app for players to compete in tournaments across some 70 different games and fantasy sports leagues. The company has grown to more than 60 million users.
The funding will enable MPL to expand outside of India and chief executive Sai Srinivas hinted in an interview with TechCrunch that the markets in his sights include neighbouring countries as well as Japan and South Korea.
The money will also allow MPL to grow its gaming catalogue and provide additional marketing services to third-party developers.
Go-Ventures previously invested in a $35.5m series A round in April 2019. Sequoia India led the round, while Times Internet, a subsidiary of media group Bennet, Coleman & Co, RTP, Beenext, Base Growth and Venture Highway also took part.
Sequoia and Beenext had already supplied $5m in funding in late 2018 in what was then also billed as a series A round.
