Newsle discovers $1.65m

American City Business Journals, a subsidiary of Advance Publications, has led a $1.65m series A round in Newsle, a US-based news discovery service that was launched in February 2012.

Other investors include venture capital firms Maveron, Draper Fisher Jurveston and Transmedia Capital and angel investors Launny Steffens and Rockwell Schnabel (who participated in a previous round).  Newsle has raised $2.25m total funding; previous investors were Lerer Ventures, SV Angel and Rockwell and Evan Schnabel.

Newsle was founded by computer science graduates Axel Hansen, Jonah Varon (both of Harvard) and Chris Polk (Auburn University), and its core technology is a disambiguation algorithm used to track people in the news.
