NPO Saturn orbits startups

Russia-based aircraft engine manufacturer NPO Saturn will collaborate with three startups that it first supported last year as part of an accelerator formed by state-owned fund of funds RVC, according to Marchmont Innovation News.

The GenerationS accelerator invites Russian corporations to identify and assist promising startups. NPO Saturn has selected three companies from the initiative and has entered talks over commercialisation and test purchases.

The startups include Semat, which develops machines for electromechanical treatment, a process used to produce prototypes in aerospace engineering. The company hopes to help NPO Saturn modernise its equipment.

Another startup, ABL, is developing fuel nozzle diagnostics equipment and has reportedly secured an undisclosed sum from RVC and Rostec, the Russian umbrella organisation for technology companies, in order to create a prototype.

Finally, Royal Carbon is developing polymer composites and has attracted the support of state-backed Bortnik Fund to create a first sample.

Dmitry Ivanov, director for innovation at NPO Saturn, said: “We are now in talks over commercialisation and test purchases with three former participants of GenerationS-2015.

“What we can offer them is, number one, give them a facility to complete their research and development and incorporate our designers’ experience; number two, start direct purchases provided that their products receive our approval; and number three, support the development of these solutions at further stages to help the startups come up with prototypes and lower most essential technological risk barriers.”
