OATV tests Science Exchange

Science Exchange, a US-based exchange listing almost 5,000 academic researcher laboratory needs, has raised $3m in its series A round, from a consortium including local publisher O’Reilly Media’s corporate venturing unit.

Alongside O’Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures (OATV), were venture capital firm Union Square Ventures, which led the A round, and angel investors and advisers, including Esther Dyson (super-angel and 23andMe board member), Jeff Hammerbacher (Cloudera founder), Ellen Levy (ex LinkedIn exec), Kal Vepuri (Trisiras Group founder), Peter Lehrman (Axial founder and ex-GLG exec), Rob Hutter (Learn Capital founder), Lisa Gansky (TheMesh founder) and Joshua Schachter (Delicious and TastyLabs founder).

The portfolio company said it also had “investment and/or advice of many investors” from its $1.5m seed round in December 2011, including Lerer Ventures, XG Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Yuri Milner, Maynard Webb, Ash Patel, and Sam Altman.

Bryce Robert, managing director of OATV, said Science Exchange has “an opportunity to become a huge marketplace as well as becoming a marketplace whose work will have a huge impact on our society”.

OATV recently invested in PeerJ, an open access publisher of scholarly articles.
